Q - Does Prarang conduct surveys to collect language data of different cities/ countries ?
A - Prarang does not conduct surveys. We rely on public information spread across various government,
news sources & public domain websites. Language surveys are done by each of the 195 country
governments in varying frequencies & various formats, often as part of population census exercises.
Besides country government websites & news sites, we validate data using reliable multilateral
sources ( World Bank data, UN bodies) & additionally use public sources including but not limited to
Wikipedia, Ethnologue etc. This does involve a lot of estimation ( for eg. population bench-marked to
year 2023 for all nations, based on growth-rate ignoring aspects of literacy growth rate or even declines due to wars etc) ,
to create comparable metrics.
Q - How does Prarang obtain city-level linguistic data of the countries in the world?
A - Except India, city level language surveys have not taken place in most countries. We therefore
apply the country language-wise percentages to each of the respective cities of the country,
to estimate City-wise language split. For Indian cities, we have the unique results of Census 2011
where precise data is available for 4500+ cities in each of the 120 Indian languages
( not just the official 22 languages) which had more than 10,000 speakers at a national level in
2011.
Q - What is the criteria used by Prarang to select the cities in the World Communication Planner?
A - Cities of the world ( 195 countries) with more than 100K population in 2023 ,
have been included in the Planner.
Q - How transparent is Prarang's data and methodology?
A - Prarang maintains full transparency regarding its data sources and estimation methodologies. For each data field, users can access detailed information about the sources and methods by clicking on the "i"
icon on the platform. This feature allows users to understand and verify the basis of the data and analysis.
